Your Gateway to Osa Peninsula

Puerto Jimenez

Puerto Jiménez, located on the southeastern coast of the Osa Peninsula, boasts a rich and dynamic history. Initially a remote fishing village, the town gained significance in the late 19th century with the rise of banana plantations and logging industries. By the mid-20th century, the gold rush attracted miners and fortune-seekers. During the gold rush era, Puerto Jiménez became a melting pot of cultures, with miners from various parts of Costa Rica and neighboring countries settling in search of prosperity.
As gold resources dwindled, the focus shifted to conservation, especially after the creation of Corcovado National Park in 1975, which cemented the town’s role as a key hub for eco-tourism.

The establishment of Corcovado National Park marked a turning point for the region. Conservationists, scientists, and nature enthusiasts began flocking to the area, drawn by the promise of unspoiled rainforest and incredible biodiversity. Over time, Puerto Jiménez evolved into a hub for eco-tourism and sustainable travel, with many locals turning to guide services, hospitality, and conservation work to support the local economy. Today, it serves as the main gateway to Corcovado, welcoming thousands of visitors each year who come to experience its rich history, abundant wildlife, and pristine landscapes. Its transition from a gold rush town to an ecotourism destination is a testament to the region’s adaptability.
